Experience Details

Set amongst deep gorges and high mountain ranges with rugged rock formations and magnificent panoramas ‘Catninga’ is the perfect choice to give you a taste of the Flinders Ranges.

Catninga homestead was built in late 1800’s when it was run as a merino sheep/wool producing property. Once you drive through the gates, the homestead will come into view and as you get closer, just by looking at the beautiful veranda, it will be confirmed to you that you have come to the real Australia.

Catninga comes with a story which your hosts will happily share with you. There is a reason why Catninga has been featured in movies and was chosen for our Horses & Cattle promotional video. It’s a beautiful place with history. So what more can we say? Have a look at the video and it will say more than a thousand words.

This is the real deal because Catninga with its hosts ticks all of the boxes of a real authentic Australian horse and cattle station experience. When we say at Horses & Cattle Australia that you will be riding with the true horse people of Australia, then Heather and Brian are nothing less.

You will be able to experience and participate in authentic station work and life and enjoy a personalised outdoor experience in a unique setting, where you can disconnect from your busy urban life and reconnect with nature.

There is a cozy guest carriage with all of the amenities required after a day in the saddle and to ensure that you get a good night’s rest.

Horses and horse riding are central to a true cattle station experience and staying with Brian and Heather will ensure that you get as many hours in the saddle working cattle or exploring the beautiful Flinders Ranges landscape on horseback as you would like.

In addition, your stay at Catninga brings together the best of personal and homelike country hospitality, accommodation and good family style cooking with regionally sourced food – not forgetting a cold beer and glass of wine at the end of the day sitting on the beautiful veranda admiring these spectacular sunsets.

What to expect

Many of our customers seek out unique horseriding adventures that deliver authentic experiences which tap into their passion points. Our signature experiences are truly bespoke and individually designed for you. Here is an itinerary with some activities previous guests have enjoyed.

Day 1 Arrival
Arrive after 2 pm, settle in and take a stroll around the property. Visit the horses before you take in the view from from the veranda with a glass of that smooth Barossa Valley Shiraz before you sit down for dinner.

Day 2
After an early or a late breakfast, ride out on the property and familiarise yourself with the area and get to know your horses.
After lunch it’s time to board the SUV and you will taken on a spectacular 4WD excursion through the rugged country up the hill. Be prepared for some views that will take your breath away and a bit of adrenaline as well. This is steep country.

And again, there will be the sunset on the veranda and another one of these great country meals waiting for you.

Day 3
Pack your lunch an everything you need for a whole day in the saddle. You will ride far up the hills and enjoy the most spectacular views on the way. Around lunch time you will arrive at the Mountain hut and enjoy a saddle bag lunch. After a bit of a snooze under one of these beautiful gum trees, you will be rested to return to the homestead.

What a wonderful day! In the evening it’s time for Brian to demonstrate some of these great Aussie barbecue skills and you can look forward to another one of these great evenings.

Day 4
Say goodbye to your hosts and the horses and beautiful Catninga – if you haven’t decided to extend your stay, which might well be the case.

The Horses

You will be riding well-bred Australian stockhorses and some quarter horses, all of them well-bred and trained as a cow horse to make your riding experience most enjoyable. These are not trail riding horses but horses which are born and bred to excel working in the bush, an environment where horses are ridden for a purpose, to get a job done.
