Experience Details

Ride with the true cattle(wo)men of the Kimberley in Western Australia who have been preserving the experience and history of the stockmen, the cattle musters and the pioneering years of one of Australia’s most beautiful regions.

You will be joining a 5 days / 6 nights horse riding adventure in the magnificent Kimberley region, exploring breathtaking landscapes on horseback and moving cattle on one of Australia’s historic cattle stations spanning over 700,000 acres.

When you saddle up for your ride in the morning you will feel transported back in time, into the scenes from Baz Luhrmann’s movie AUSTRALIA. Yes, you are not mistaken, this is where some of the filming took place. So, giddy up, enjoy the view and check on these cattle!

Limited to a maximum of eight riders, this is an authentic Australian cattle station experience – not just an experience prepared for the visitors – so be prepared for some early starts and a few long days in the saddle as we will be riding for about 4 – 6 hours every day. It is a station-based program which means you will be returning to the station each night.

The week includes morning rides with smoko (tea break), lunches at remote waterholes on certain days and lunches in the shade of the homestead veranda on others, afternoon rides, sunset rides, and evening camp fires at the homestead. After a hearty dinner, your comfortable bed with a view of the star filled sky will be calling.

As with all of Horses & Cattle Australia experiences, this is the real deal and to get the most out of the experience as a guest, you will be supported by experienced stock(wo)men guiding you. If you are an experienced rider this will be an experience of a lifetime.

What to expect

Day 1 Arrival
You will be picked up in Kununurra around mid-day and meet the crew and the horses. Plans for the next day will be discussed during dinner.

Day 2 – 6

We spend the first morning getting to know the horses, and will then be riding out along the tidal billabongs to the north of the station-wide open spaces that will take your breath away!

Since this is an authentic cattle station experience, it’s the animals and nature who dictate the schedule and what you will be doing varies from day to day.

A typical day would be an early rise, breakfast, saddle up and ride out to the area being worked that day. There might be days when cattle need to be moved and on other days you will just ride out and check on mobs of cattle, see how they are faring. In addition, there will be some checking of fences and watering points along the way.

Throughout the day, you will be rewarded with magnificent views and you will no doubt feel like you are being transported back to Drover times gone by.

In the evening, before dinner at the station you will welcome the luxury of washing off your sweat and the red dirt you kicked up during these great canters along the river flats – in your own starlight shower in your little bush hut.

Anyone keen to ride into the sunset? One thing not to be missed are the sunset nibbles and drinks out at the boab grove. Regardless if you want to ride into the sunset with your equine companion or if you prefer to just hop into the 4WD, the view of the Cockburn Ranges and the marsh country at sunset is pretty spectacular!

After dinner it’s time to regroup around the campfire having a bit of a yarn with your mates and listening to some stories. And, before you retire to your bush hut for a good night’s rest, you will be marvelling at these never seen like this before –starry skies which will keep you stargazing into the night.

Day 7 Departure
Transfer to Kununurra after breakfast. On the way back to Kununurra, your host will take you into the small town of Wyndham and up to the Five Rivers Lookout with spectacular views to be enjoyed. This will be followed by a visit to the local bakery with an opportunity to taste a crocodile or a delicious barramundi pie. On the way back to Kununurra, there will also be a stop at the beautiful Marlgu World Heritage Bird Reserve (Parry Lagoon). This is a haven for tropical water birds of many kinds of freshwater and saltwater (estuarine) crocodiles which can be watched from the boardwalk. This is definitely well worth a visit!

The Horses

There is a large herd of well trained and sure-footed horses available each one of them familiar with the terrain and riding with cattle and all horses will be matched to the riders’ abilities for a most enjoyable experience.
