Experience Details

Ride with the true cattle(wo)men of the Kimberleys in Western Australia who have been preserving the experience and history of the stockmen, the cattle musters and the pioneering years of one of Australia’s most beautiful regions.

You will be joining a 5 days / 6 nights cattle station adventure in the magnificent Kimberley region, riding on two of the most historic over 700,000 acres large cattle stations. Just to give you an idea, this is an area larger than the European country of Luxembourg.

When you saddle up for your ride in the morning you will feel transported back in time, into the scenes from Baz Luhrmann’s movie AUSTRALIA. Yes, you are not mistaken, this is where some of the filming took place. So, enjoy the view and ride your heart out! This experience take you deep into the Kimberley bush, where you will spend six to seven hours a day in the saddle engaging in some station and cattle work and riding through the extraordinary landscape of sandstone escarpments, waterholes, alluvial plains, and tidal rivers following old stock routes and drover trails. You will ride through landscapes and sceneries which will take your breath away.

This Kimberleys cattle station experience does tick off most points on a horse enthusiast’s bucket list ride.

What to expect

Day 1 Arrival
You will be picked up in Kununurra after around mid-day and meet your hosts and guides and the small group you will be riding with.

Day 2 – 6
We spend the first morning getting to know the horses, and will then be riding out along the tidal billabongs to the north of the station-wide open spaces that will take your breath away!

Since this is an authentic cattle station experience, it’s the animals and nature who dictate the schedule and what you will be doing varies from day to day. However, a typical day would be an early rise, breakfast, saddle up and ride out and participate in some station work.

There might be days when cattle need to be mustered and on other days you will be checking on cattle, water throughs or fencing. Throughout the day, you will be rewarded with magnificent views and you will no doubt feel like you are transported back to Drover times gone by.

In the evening, before dinner at the station you will welcome the luxury of washing off your sweat and the red dirt you kicked up during these great canters along the river flats – in your own starlight shower in your little bush hut. Depending on the type of work and the location of the activity, it could well be that you will be camping under the stars for one or two nights as well.

We don’t envisage that you would want to take any break from horses, cattle and riding whilst you are out here, but should you want to chill out by the river with a book and a cold beer or glass of wine, or go for a bush walk and do a bit of wildlife spotting there is plenty to do for non-riding companions or if you want to find your own secluded spot for relaxation. With the best fishing country at your doorstep you also might want to try your hand at fishing Barramundi from the banks of the tidal King River and bring home your catch for dinner.

In the evening, after dinner it’s time to regroup around the campfire having a bit of a yarn with your mates and listening to some bushranger stories. And, before you retire to your bush hut for a good night’s rest, you will be marveling at these never seen like this before –starry skies which will keep you stargazing into the night.

Day 7 Departure
Transfer to Kununurra after breakfast. On the way back to Kununurra, your host will take you into the small town of Wyndham and up to the Five Rivers Lookout with spectacular views to be enjoyed. This will be followed by a visit to the local bakery with an opportunity to taste a crocodile or a delicious barramundi pie. On the way back to Kununurra, there will also be a stop at the beautiful Marlgu World Heritage Bird Reserve (Parry Lagoon). This is a haven for tropical water birds of many kinds and freshwater crocodiles which can be watched from the boardwalk. This is definitely well worth a visit!

The Horses

There is a large herd of well trained and sure-footed #stockhorses available each one of them familiar with the terrain and working cattle and all horses will be matched to the riders’ abilities for a most enjoyable experience. Matching the right horse with a rider is so much more important for work on a cattle station when horse and rider form a true partnership to get the cattle work done.
