Experience Details

If you arrive at the crossroads of one of Australia’s best beach spots and a true Australian horse and cattle adventure you must be on your way from Gympie to Rainbow Beach and Fraser Island. If you are a horse rider visiting from overseas this means you can tick-off two items which are on your bucket list – Fraser Island and Australia’s best horse adventure! You are about ready to get right into the thrill of chasing some cattle and at the same time take your horse and ride on one of the world’s most beautiful beaches.

This must be Australian’s absolute best horseriding adventure, not only because of its location and beauty but because it ideally combines action packed days with a touch of beach and luxury and hospitality, all delivered by the great horse people who have been living in this area for generations.

Once you arrive up on Goomboorian mountain, you will be able to enjoy fabulous views across the Sunshine Coast landscape, the ocean sparkling in the distance with a view of Fraser Island. And be warned, the view from the deck is nothing short of spectacular and it will take your breath away.

This is the place where you will not just be horse riding, you will enjoy a learning experience which can easily get you prepared for your second career as a jackaroo or jillaroo should you be tempted to never leave this place which you might be, I assure you. Throughout the week, guided by Andrew, you will get involved in all facets of working with cattle and learn what it takes to train and ride high performance stock horses with whom you will enjoy a true working partnership. You will love these horses!

And then let’s not forget what your own local chef and his brigade will prepare for you. It’s a far cry from what you would expect on a camping trip and you will just be amazed about the culinary Aussie delights which will be served up from the camp ovens or prepared over an open fire. It will include everything what the local waters and paddock have on offer.

If you are looking for more experiences of which dreams are made of, the absolute highlight of the week will be a full day trip to the most famous Rainbow Beach, where you will spend a day riding your horse along this beautiful long stretch of sandy beach!

Is there anything else to say about this experience? You just have to come and see to believe!

What to expect

Day 1
Be ready to be picked up at Sunshine Coast Airport in the morning for the transfer to the farm. Following your arrival you will be “chauffeured” up the mountain to the camp, which will be your home for the duration of the adventure. Move into your tent and have a stroll around this beautiful area before being matched with your equine companion of the week. In the afternoon you will be busy learning all about horse riding on a cattle station. Before you hear the triangle dinner bell, pick-up a glass of wine or beer and just enjoy the view. Australia does not get better than that.

Following a great dinner, you will retire to your camp to get a good night’s sleep.

Day 2
After a breakfast fit for a king rather than for a ringer (a different word for jillaroo/jackaroo working in Australia’s North) it’s time to go out for your first ride and get to know your horse by working in the paddock, guided by Andrew’s knowledge about Australian horsemanship.

Shortly before lunch is the time to giddy up and ride out – or we should say “ride into the pub” for lunch. That’s exactly what it will be, you will have a chance to have a drink at the bar with your horse in tow. We are happy to take your picture showing you and your equine companion having a drink at the bar. Well, it only happens in Australia but please be advised that no alcoholic beverages will be offered to your horse! Following a delicious lunch at the pub, the ride will take you back to the farm through some beautiful tropical landscapes. This is a good area and time to spot some koalas in the wild.

Day 3
This will be a full day in the saddle with some work on the farm such as checking fences and water troughs along the way. You will have lunch at Andrew’s home at the original family farm homestead before you engage in a couple more hours of riding.

In the evening, watch another of these marvellous sunsets on the deck before enjoying one of these great Aussie barbecues followed by a yarn with your fellow riding mates around the campfire.

Day 4
This will be a great day out on the beach, not only for you, but also for the horses who will be trucked out to Rainbow Beach in the morning and our group will follow in cars. Down at the beach, you will enjoy fabulous beach riding on Rainbow Beach which has been crowned as one of Australia’s most incredible beaches. It is also one of the very few Queensland locations where you are actually allowed to ride a horse on the beach. By now you will probably have worked up a bit of an appetite and it’s time to sit down for a wonderful picnic on the beach.

In the afternoon, for the more advanced riders, weather and surf conditions permitting, there is the possibility to unsaddle and ride the horses bareback into the surf! This will be the ultimate riding adventure!

Days 5 – 6
These two and a half days will be busy out in the stockyard, action packed days filled with cattle work where you will be mustering and sorting out cattle and helping with earmarking, branding and everything else that needs to be done.

Your epic riding adventure will – unfortunately – come to an end on Friday afternoon when you will have to say your goodbyes!

The Horses

There is a herd of very good looking horses waiting for you – about thirty of them, well-bred and trained Quarter Horses and Australian Stockhorses. They are all athletic, well trained, quiet but very “cowy” to give you that outstanding experience when mustering cattle and riding out in the bush.

Andrew McCarthy

Meet Andrew McCarthy, passionate horseman and successful local businessman. Born and bred in this most beautiful area, Andrew is a true local and driven by his love for horses, cattle and this most beautiful part of Australia.
