Experience Details

Westpoint Station is a 17,000 acres/6,880 ha working cattle station, carrying 2000 head of cattle. It is the home of the most successful and truly legendary Campdrafter and his family in Australian history. Headquartered at Westpoint is also the Pete Comiskey Campdraft School, where the Comiskey’s breed and train the best campdraft horses in the world and where Pete opens the station to a selected group of individuals a few times a year, to learn from him.

Spending time with Pete and his family on Westpoint Station will introduce you how horses are bred, kept and trained on the property and will let you become involved in the every day life on an Australian cattle station.

Throughout your stay, Pete will share with you, his keys to his consistent success which spans his entire career and you will get so many insights which will add value to your personal development as a horse(wo)men and to the relationship you have with your own horse. However, best of all, you will be introduced to campdrafting and get plenty of practice opportunities, with a number of good runs with your horse and chasing plenty of those beasts (Campdrafting lingo for cattle) waiting to challenge you.

On day 5 and 6 of your experience you will be able to participate in one of Pete’s great campdrafting clinics during your stay. This will be a once in a lifetime experience not to be missed.

And there is much more to Pete’s sharing his insights and experience about campdrafting and to participate in some cattle work with him and his team. Being part of it will always remind you that campdrafting is a family sport, which embodies the lifestyle of the Australian cattlemen and women, born out of the love for the wide land, for the horses and cattle which all blends in perfectly with spending time with family and great friends.

What to expect

Day 1 Arrival

Drive through the gates of Westpoint Station and meet your hosts. Stroll around the property and take in the sights before Pete will give you an overview of the plan for the week and discuss your expectations.

Day 2

Meet the horses and shadow Pete as he gives you an introduction to Australian Stockmanship and how horses are bred, trained and worked on Westpoint Station and prepared for their career as a cowhorse and/or a high-performance campdrafting athlete. Shadow Pete and watch him how he trains his horses every day. To keep the horses fit, each horse will get some swimming training and with a bit of luck you will be able to see the horses enjoy their morning swim. Later in the morning, saddle up and take your horse out for a ride. Get the feel for these very special and responsive horses. Participate in an introduction to stockmanship and learn about the Australian style of riding and what’s key when riding out doing cattle work.

Day 3 – 4

This is life on a real cattle station. The work to be done, the land, the animals and the people on the station will determine the specific activities you will be involved in each day. This may include anything from mustering cattle, yardwork like branding, earmarking, checking water troughs and bores, checking and repairing fences, etc. Throughout the week Pete and his crew will work with you individually to individually develop your horsemanship and improving your riding skills. In the evening, sit around the campfire or on the veranda and have a bit of yarn, as the Aussies would say. Gaze at the most beautiful skies and enjoy the starry nights out here in the bush before you fall asleep.

Day 5 – 6

This is the day when you will be ready to enrol and participate in a 2 days Pete Comiskey Campdraft Clinic! Prove and further develop your skills acquired throughout the week and learn how to become a real Campdrafter. It will be an experience of a lifetime!

Day 7 Departure

Following a leisurely breakfast, you will have to say goodbye to the best horses you have ever ridden and to the new friends you have made throughout the week. And no – you won’t be able to take your horse home with you, but you can come back for a visit!

The Horses

I am sure you have been riding great horses in your life, but once you are out in the bush working cattle with these horses you will agree that Pete’s horses are just playing in a different league. Pete has his own views what makes a good horse and he will tell you why the connection you build with your horse is so important. So, each of his horses is a horse bred and trained not only for great performance but for the character and temperament, required to delight his owner and rider every day by working as a real team, every moment during these long days in the saddle working out in the bush or in the competitive arena.
